Figured Maple and Walnut Box with Hinged Lid
The front, back, and panel in the lid of this box are crafted from figured maple. The sides and frame of the lid are black walnut. The contrast between the even grain in the black walnut and the wave-like pattern in the maple adds dimension and interest to this functional piece of art. The solid wood walls are 1/2″ thick, resulting in an heirloom-quality box that will last for generations.
The bottom of the box is yellow poplar. Two solid brass hinges support the lid, which is balanced to stay open in the upright position (in other words, it won’t fall shut and smash your fingers). The lid handle is turned from a piece of Alaska moose antler and mounted to the box with two brass pins.
The box is constructed with interlocking box joints, also known as finger joints.
Dimensions: 9-1/4″ side to side x 6-1/2″ front to back x 3-3/4″ tall.
Finished with multiple coats of a penetrating Danish oil, the box was buffed and waxed to a satin sheen.
Use and Care Instructions: Dust and fingerprints can be removed with a soft cotton cloth or microfiber towel. Please do not use the box to hold anything that retains moisture. Avoid placing the box near a direct source of high heat.
