Welcome to Ted’s Woodshop, the website of woodturner and craftsman Ted Heuer. I specialize in functional art that is intended to be used and enjoyed. All of my work is made in Homer, Alaska. Nothing is mass produced. Each of the items is individually handcrafted and I rarely, if ever, make two pieces that are identical.
I have been a woodworker for over 30 years. My wife and I came to Alaska in 1982, never dreaming that this would be our permanent home. I retired in 2007 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Refuge Manager of the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge headquartered in Fairbanks.
I enjoy working with all types of hardwoods, domestic and exotic. Only the highest quality boards are used in my products, and I especially seek out highly-figured woods and burls. Some of the wood that I use costs more than $50/board foot. Stains or tints are rarely used in my work, as I prefer to showcase the natural colors and grains of woods. I am particularly fond of working with quality hardwoods that have been recycled from old buildings.
I, along with my wife (and business partner) Beth, have operated Ted’s Woodshop in Homer since 2008. In addition to items that can be purchased online through this site, my work can be found year-round at Ptarmigan Arts Gallery in Homer, at the Flying Whale Coffee Shop at the Homer Airport, seasonally (summer only) through Diamond Ridge Art Studio on the Homer Spit, and during the holiday shopping season at the Kenai Arts and Crafts Fair and the Homer Nutcracker Faire. You can find Ted’s Woodshop on Facebook, where Beth posts updates and photos of new items.
As a participant in the Made in Alaska program, I label each of my items with the bear and cub logo to signify that my work is produced in Alaska and meets the program’s certification requirements.
My handcrafted wooden items can be safely cleaned with a damp cloth and wiped dry with a soft towel. Items are not dishwasher safe and should never be left to soak in a sink. Use and care instructions are provided with each item.
I am available to create custom pieces, using woods of the buyer’s choice, and am also available to do custom precision woodworking upon request. Please contact me with your custom woodworking inquiries.
